What a wonderful comedienne, she filled my life with many, many laughs! I used to enjoy her stand up routines when she was on TV. I will always remember you and thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
Phyllis had a great show that was on ABC in the 60’s – the name of the show was “The Pruitts Of Southampton”
I even remember the opening jingle which went like this:
The Pruitts Of Southampton live like the richest folks, but what the folks don’t know is that the Pruitts are flat broke!!!!
The show aired the 1966 – 1967 season, later the name was changed to The Phyllis Diller Show
She credited Bob Hope for growing her fame as she appeared with him in 23 television specials and 3 films in the 1960’s. Her laughter alone would make me laugh, it was contagious! She was a pioneer who championed crazy outfits and crazy hairstyles – oh god she was just so vibrant and hilarious and I truly miss her. Today’s comedians should take some pages out of her book – and you do not need to use profanity to be funny.
Phyllis was also a very talented piano soloist who appeared with some 100 symphony orchestras across the US, using the stage name Dame Illya Dillya between the years 1971 – 1981. The San Francisco Examiner called her “a fine concert pianist with a firm touch” after a review of one of her concerts.
Phyllis passed away in her sleep at her Brentwood, Los Angeles home on August 20, 2012 at the age of 95 with a smile on her face!
We will miss you beautiful lady!
